Fact or Myth: Teletherapy

SINCE MARCH OF 2020, SO MANY TELEMEDICINE OPTIONS HAVE BEEN CREATED…AND ALONG WITH IT, MANY QUESTIONS!

Today we will be playing FACT or MYTH all about teletherapy! This will help provide additional information about this popular form of therapy and answer any additional questions you may have.

IT’S NOT AS EFFECTIVE: MYTH

This is a huge myth! Research continues to prove that teletherapy services are as effective as in-person services.

INCREASED ACCESS TO SLPS: FACT

Teletherapy eliminates SLP travel commutes to homes, schools, or daycares. This allows for easier scheduling with more time options. Also, it allows for more access to SLPS for those who live in rural or remote areas.

TOO MUCH SCREEN TIME: MYTH

Watching a television show or playing an online game are forms of passive screen time. Limited, static screen time is recommended; however, teletherapy is a two-way interactive video. Teletherapy sessions are actively engaging a child’s brain and are filled with communication, socialization, and brain work.

MY CHILD IS TOO YOUNG: MYTH

For young children, the coaching model is employed. This model utilizes an SLP as a coach and offers specialized techniques, demonstrations, and education to the parents or caregivers. From this, a parent is able to take what is learned within the session and use it directly within the home environment. Early intervention is critical. There is no need to delay to wait for in-person services!

MY CHILD CAN’T SIT STILL/CAN’T ATTEND: MYTH

Based on your child’s attention or sensory needs, our skilled SLPs incorporate movement activities and breaks throughout a session. Therapy tasks are selected to match your child’s learning style, as therapy is not one-size-fits-all! Interactive games, books, and computer activities make for a fun and engaging session- your child may not even feel like it is “therapy!”

MY CHILD WON’T BE ABLE TO CONNECT TO THE SLP: MYTH

Establishing a connection and creating a positive learning environment is so important and is not lost with teletherapy. An SLP fosters a positive environment by providing positive feedback and encouragement. Plus, the SLP is able to connect and engage with a child in their natural “home” environment. A child can use their toys or invite a family member into the session!

IT’S EASIER TO SCHEDULE AND KEEP CONSISTENT: FACT

Families are busy enough! Teletherapy allows for fewer cancellations from sickness or scheduling conflicts. More consistency supports quicker progress!
